Using relevant examples, critically discuss some of the roles that social workers can play in the criminal justice system in Uganda.

To start with, the criminal justice system is comprised of major components including law enforcement, courts, and corrections. These components work together to prevent and punish deviant behavior.

Social work practice in the criminal justice system represents a crucial role that social workers play within the forensic realm. Social workers in criminal justice settings have three fundamental ethical and professional obligations: to ameliorate the mental health needs of their clients, to return individuals to the community who will be productive, and serve the interests of public safety.

Without doubt, social workers serve in a variety of roles within the criminal justice system in Uganda. Examples include victim advocacy, working with probation and parole, preparing children to testify in court, working with families, providing mental health services to inmates and prisoners preparing to return to their communities.

A criminal justice social workers day-to-day activities largely include providing consultation to law enforcement personnel, law makers, attorneys, paralegals, community members, correctional officers, doctors, and psychiatrists on interdisciplinary teams.
